Benjamin Barker est un séduisant barbier de Londres marié à Lucy, une très jolie jeune femme. Ils ont ensemble une fille, Johanna mais un jour l'ignoble Juge Turpin amoureux de Lucy décide d'envoyer son mari en prison pour gagner le coeur de la belle. Benjamin passe 15 ans de sa vie en camp de travaux forcés et revient finalement à Londres sous le nom de Sweeney Todd, grâce à un jeune marin nommé Anthony avec la seule envie de se venger du Juge Turpin et de retrouver son foyer. Cependant, Sweeney apprend de la bouche d'une boulangère appelée Mrs Lovett que Lucy s'est suicidée et que Johanna a été adoptée par le Juge qui prévoit de l'épouser. Sweeney va donc se lancer dans un machiavélique désir de vengeance en ouvrant une échoppe de barbier et en tuant tout ces nouveaux clients dans le seul but d'assouvir sa soif de vengeance, en attendant d'égorger le Juge Turpin. Grâce à sa comparse Mrs Lovett ( qui va devenir célèbre grâce à ses tourtes fourées aux cadavres que Sweeney à tués), Sweeney parviendra -t-il à se venger de l'injustice auquel l'a condamné le Juge Turpin et à retrouver sa fille Johanna ?
